Where is the Flower Man?

Where is the Flower Man?

With a lot of hard work, a little luck, and your patronage, I have cultivated a flower-selling trade into a very successful small business. However, now, the powers that be, in the police department, are attempting to put me out of business.

I have offered high quality flowers at a low price, on a daily basis for 16 years, at the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Northside Parkway. The local merchants, the traffic, and I have existed together amicably.

UNTIL NOW!

Around Mother's Day of this year, I was stopped by the police and told that I could no longer work on the corner. I have tried to navigate the bureaucracy, and thus far, have been unsuccessful.

I appreciate the business of my loyal customers, and it is with hat in hand that I must now ask for your help. If you would like to see me back on the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Northside Parkway, offering you the convenience of flower sales without leaving your car, please add a comment. The comments will be used to petition the City for me to be allowed to return to the corner.

Thank you,
Robert Hiestand

Robert has been a friend of mine for the past six years. He has allways been courtious and respectful and his flowers are allways of good quality.

I have known Robert for several years, he is a hard working man with a heart of pure gold. Although you would never be able to tell by his upbeat attitude, I feel he is just heart broken by what the city has chosen to do to him. Please reconsider your decision to remove him from a position that brings many people joy.....especially him.

Robert, Dad sent me your web site and it's wonderful. I've enjoyed all the newspaper articles about you and your business. I'm very sorry your having trouble with the powers that be. Please let me know what the latest information is. I look foward to hearing from you. Your brother Mike

Was disappointed when the guys at the gas station told me the law had run
Robert off. I'm sorry for him and we customers. I went to his website; but,
alas, when I called the telephone number posted, I was told that I had the
wrong number.
I am hoping one of you nice folks knows how to reach him (if he still is
selling roses/flowers--am having a party Sunday, and was hoping to buy
from Robert)
Thanks, Jack Candler

To whom it may concern,
Robert is a part of all of our lives, he is a part of the Paces Ferry Community. I can assure you that no one in our community has a problem with him being on HIS corner. He has not done anything but brighten all of our days for 16 years! LET ROBERT STAY!

Robert needs to be back on West Paces ferry and earning a living. This is not asking too much. He is a legend on the corner and works during all kinds of weather. It would be nice if this corner were fixed up as the condition is very bad.

Robert is a deserving, hard-working man who should be allowed to sell his flowers. He is always careful to not interfere with traffic, and he brightens everyone's day. He is one of the many "little things" that make life in Atlanta better. Let Robert return to his corner!!!

I hope that the city will reconsider their decision. My husband grew up in this area and one of his fondest childhood memories is buying fresh flowers with his dad for his mom.
I think the police should worry about more important issues that are plagueing this community and let Robert come back to the corner. It is not the same anymore to drive thru that intersection with out him being there. Everyone I talk to feels the same way.

Kind Regards,

So that's why we haven't seen Robert! I can't think of a single reason why he shouldn't continue to sell his flowers at our neighborhood streetcorner - if the merchants don't object, I don't see why anyone else should. He's very careful not to sell flowers while traffic is moving and thus there is never a backup there which is caused by Robert.

Give the guy a chance to be a small entrepreneur!

Robert is one of the sweetest men I have ever had the honor of meeting. Not only did he supply my husband with 7 dozen of the most beautiful roses that he proposed to me with, but he also supplied us with the roses for our wedding May 22nd, 2004. Robert is one of the last reminders that not all businesses are impersonal and in a hurry. He is a wonderful man who has done nothing wrong and keeping him off the corner he has been on for so many years is just wrong.

I bought a dozen roses from Robert just two weeks ago (Feb 2005), and I am saddened to think that we may never see him on the corner again. Please allow Robert to return to 41 & Paces Ferry. He is one of the few remaining examples of Atlanta's charm and character.

Robert is well-liked and much-wanted by the West Paces / Northside Parkway community. We do NOT want to see him pushed out of his business by anyone. I have seen him work his trade day after day for many many years and have always known him to be pleasant and friendly to everyone. Even if legally correct, it would be an outrageous moral failure to evict him. I will personally call Governor Perdue's office to encourage support for Robert from the highest level in the State of Georgia.

Very sincerely,

Robert has done nothing to deserve the unfair removal from the corner. He never bothered anyone and did not deserve to be removed. On what grounds? Does he really have to own the corner to sell there. In the purpose of tradition - make an exception for an exceptional guy.,

I live in the neighborhood and for as long as I can remember you have been at the corner. You have an amazing work ethic and someone with that kind of dedication should not be proibited. It is unfair to make you move if you been there for 16 years. It makes no sense that this is suddenly a problem. Good luck!

Having been around literally my whole life, this man has become a tradition to those of us in buckhead. Just as well, having done nothing legally wrong and having every right to be there, he has provided a method for happiness and the sharing thereof in the area. He should wihtout a doubt be allowed to remain.

This seems absurd. There must be a way for Robert to abide by the city's regulations, and also, continue his business endeavors on the same corner. I don't see any difference betweeen his situation and the small farmers that bring fresh produce into Atlanta, that the city is also trying to stop. We have much more important matters towards which we need to be spending time and energy. Shirley, what say you???

The "Flower Man" has been at that corner longer than I have been living..He actually is a big part of our school...every Valentines Day/Mothers Day there is alot of talk about how people bought flowers from the "flower man" for a great price. He has done nothing wrong and I don't see a problem with him WORKING there.

You are such a great person in the midst of so many crappy Buckhead people. Ever since I can remember driving home from Pace when I went there you were there selling your flowers.... sure as the sun will rise. I mean seriuosly... this man is selling flowers because it's what he does, on a small island in the middle of the road not obstructing traffic or doing anything to harm anybody. SHAME ON THE CITY for being so naive and cruel! Let this man sell his flowers!

I love the flower man. He does absolutly no harm to anyone and puts no one in danger. Over the thirteen years of driving past him on the way to school all he has done has provided me with a subtle comfort and a smile. Adverse possession is probably your best bet against city in claiming your rights to the corner. However, your occupancy of the corner must meet five elements: 1. open and notorious (must put true owner on actual notice i.e. the city) 2. actual and exclusive: must physically occupy the land. 3. continuous: possession must not be interrupted. 4. wrongful: cannot have permission of rightful owner. 5. prescribed period of time: most states 10-20 years. It seems as if you meet all basic requirements but you must check with the city because their code on adverse possession will be more specific.

I have lived and grown up around the Northside and West Paces Ferry Road area my entire life. I went to Trinity just down the road and now I'm at Pace. Mr. Hiestand has been on that corner ever since I can remember and has a place in the hearts of anyone that is even the slightest bit familiar with the area. His picture has appeared in a countless number of high school newspapers, yearbooks, included in album art, and on posters - he truly is a part of everyone's life. Mr. Hiestand does not ask for much, in the past 16 years his price for a dozen roses has never increased, and day after day he continues to grace the corner of Northside Parkway and West Paces. The fact that the city has found it neccessary to not only disturb the simple life of a flower merchant, but to disrupt one of the great icons of our community is unbelievable. He sells flowers; I challenge someone to find something that is wrong or bad with that.

This is absolutely ridiculous, that after 16 years you aren't able to continue your business.
I've bought flowers from you in the past, and just the other day I needed some flowers for a friend of mine. So I went to the corner of W. Paces and Northside expecting you to be there, but I was disappointed. To my dismay, I later learned the reason.
We (the students of Pace Academy) have started a petition to bring you back!

I am heartbroken to hear of this situation- my family uses this fellows roses for every party and family function around. Do the police have nothing better to do with their time then give me parking tickets and prevent a decent man from trying to make a living? OK, the parking tickets I get, my bad, but Mr. Hiestand is not blocking a fire lane or selling drugs. He is providing a service to the community and adding "character" to the neighborhood. He is a local icon; West Paces & Northside without The Flower Man just isn't the same; it makes the neighborhood seem dead

As a student of the nearby Westminster Schools, nothing brightens my mourning better than seeing the always smiling "Rose Man" on the corner of West Paces. He has become a part of our culture, and to say all the sudden that he "cant sell roses any more" is hypocracy.

Your removal from the corner is outrageous! You've sold me flowers so many times, I wouldn't know where else to get them! You make shopping before Pace Musicals very convenient, and you've done nothing to warrant this. After 16 years, why now?

I second the words of my friend Wes French. We need the rose man back. When car accidents or someone was in trouble in the intersection, the rose man was the first one there to help. He's a great guy, not to mention the fact that he sells great roses at a great price.

I love the rose man, he is a fixture in the community. Also, he is reasonably attractive, and has saved numerous lives from the 'traffic monster' that is the intersection of West Paces and Northside Parkway. In addition, he has been instrumental in the capture of approximately 3299 illegal immagrants, and has also caught and euthanized about 5545 stray dogs. Without him, illegal immigrants and stray dogs will undoubtedly run amock in the city. So please Shirley Franklin, if you do nothing else in your term besides make biased statements regarding women's rights, release the flower man and do some good for the Buckhead community.

Sincerely yours, Jordan Shmall P.H.D

My Dearest Robert,
One of my fondest childhood memories is of sitting in father's lap helping him pay you for flowers on Mother's Day, Valentine's, Mother's Birthday, Anniversary, Grandmother's birthday, Sister's birthday, Aunt Sally's birthday. I hope someday to be able to do the same with my son so that he too can experience the joy of your company. For them to pull you off the corner is like tearing a gaping hole in my lonesome heart.
You are a true inspiration for everyone living the American dream. God bless America.

Robert is more than "Rose Man;" he is a Buckhead icon. A fun guy to have a 30 second talk with at a red light and an occasional traffic director, Robert represents all the great features of the American worker. He's out there long hours in the extreme heat and cold, making his small fortune in a unique way. With other prominent issues such as illegal immigrants at the forefront of society today, it seems outrageous that our city would attack a hardworking service worker of the city. If he is permanently banned, rest assured that the unified high-schoolers of Westminster, Lovett, and Pace will make noise

Robert-
My father bought roses for my mom when they were young and now I buy flowers from you when Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Prom, what have you, comes around. The city's decision to encroach upon your enterprise is, to say the least, absurd. Not only does your business do nothing to interrupt the flow of traffic, but your prices and selection outstanding. Moreover, your presence on the corner of West Paces and Northside has become an icon of the Buckhead community, and it is a travesty that the city has barred you from continuing what you are doing. I just want to let you know that you have my full support. I assure you that I am not alone--as has been proven by this page--and I am confident that you will be successful in the end. Everyone at Westminster supports you, Robert! FIGHT THE MAN!

Robert the Rose man is a landmark. He has every right in the world to be there. Where else can kids and parents on their way to Pace, Lovett, or Westminster plays get roses when they forget to. Its too much trouble to go back to kabloom or publix. Let him stay!

Robert is the greatest. He is always there with a smile on his face selling his flowers to all those who may need some at a given time. He has never caused anyone any trouble and he has become a local legend. If you can really call what Robert is doing a "crime," I believe that APD's time could be much better spent catching real criminals. To make him stop now is a crime itself; let Robert stay.

There was probably some municipal violation that caused Robert to be turned away from The Corner, but considering this man has done his work for 16 years peacefully and with no harm to the community, surely he deserves better. He is an icon of West Paces Ferry, and a friend of the community.

Please let him continue his business- he does his work with a certain pride, and it's a familiar pleasure to see him selling his flowers day after day. Countless lives have been touched by his services, though the narratives included in this petition reflect just a few. I would hope our city representatives could do better for this man than simply eject him with no justifiable reason after 16 years of peacable business.

If he was convicted of a crime of some sort that would be different- but as of now there has been no justification, and therefore no reason to prevent this man from peacably doing his job. Please let him return. We miss him.

I cannot imagine driving along W. Paces Ferry without Robert the Rose Man there on a play nights for Westminster, Lovett, and Pace or around all holidays. Why would anyone want to get rid of one of the greatest services around? He's been selling roses for as long as most of us kids can remember being at school along W. Paces and there's no reason to make him leave.

This is crazy, Robert The Rose Man has allways been a contribution to the West Paces intersection and surrounding shopping centers. In a world where any type of business(even selling flowers) is rarely done on a personal level, the Rose Man adds character and personality to this busy intersection and I don't understand why an exception can't be made so he can stay where he has been for the past sixteen years.

Mr. Hiestand, Your presence on the corner of Northside Pkwy and West Paces has been consistent for as long as I can remember. It has always been nice to know that no matter how much Atlanta has changed, some things remain the same. Of all of the roadside vendors I have encountered in Atlanta, you are by far one of the most courteous. Your presence on the corner of Northside Pkwy and West Paces has only ever enriched the surrounding Buckhead community. I implore the Atlanta City Police Department to allow you to return to work.

Mr. Hiestand is a fixture of the neighborhood. It would not be the same place without him at the corner. Mr. Heistand, your presence on the corner of W. Paces Ferry and Northside Pkwy. has only been an asset to the Atlanta/Buckhead community. Your presence on that corner is a Buckhead institution, and you are one of the most courteous and organized street vendors I have ever met. This part of Buckhead could never be the same without Mr. Hiestand. Not only have I lived on Northside Drive my entire life, but I'm also a Pace Academy graduate and can neither imagine nor remember the corner of West Paces and Northside Parkway without him. I can see no reason to stop him from selling beautiful and affordable flowers as he has continued to do for sixteen years, especially when I see how much support he has from our community. Furthermore, in the dozens of times I've seen him, I have NEVER seen him do anything dangerous, unlawful, or discourteous. Please allow him to return to the corner; he is sorely missed.

I have been going to school at Westminster for 12 years, 13 next year as a Senior, and i have seen Robert every morning as I turn right off of Northside to go to school. 12.5 years of seeing a guy and then one morning, poof he's gone. I can;t take it. I have never seen Robert be anything but lively and curteous to anyone driving or walking by him. He has always sold his roses, never being detrimental to anyone, never holding anyone or anything up. The policeman who booted Robert from his concrete island is insane. This is garbage. this is horrible news! Robert is a great man who dies no harm. He politely sells flowers in the afternoon and even directs traffic so there will not be any hold-ups. Taking Robert away is taking away a major part of West Paces/ Northside. Who ever thinks this is a "crime" and came up with taking him off the corner definately thought wrong. He is a legend to buckhead and always makes people happy. Bring Robert Back

i want to know who the jerk is that said rob can't sell roses on west paces!! i always buy flowers there to brighten up my apartment that i work hard to live in and luckily i can still afford flowers because of his generous price. i think that the police department is just jealous that they are'nt as loved as robert!

Expelling the famed Rose Man from his island abode perfectly exemplifies the absolute incompetence of the government of the City of Atlanta (i.e. Shirley Franklin) and the Atlanta Police Department. It now seems likely that the angry citizens of Atlanta will revolt unless the Rose Man is restored to his proper position. Thank you and good day

Robert has definitly been a huge part of my childhood. My dad would always buy my mom and i flowers from him for special occasions. Robert has been there for sixteen years and there is no reason that he should'nt still be there. Robert is one of the reasons that buckhead is a great place to live. LET ROBERT STAY!

Robert the Rose Man is a fixture in West Paces if not Buckhead society. He is always smiling, occasionally alerting an ignorant driver that the light is in fact green, and the music from that boombox of his just gets my foot a-tapping. Voltaire once wrote, "If the bookseller happens to desire a privilege for his merchandise, whether he is selling Rabelais or the Fathers of the Church, the magistrate grants the privilege without answering for the contents of the book." The case is exactly the same here. The police, nor the government, should interfere with this man's business, built with his sweat, tears, and blood, and a man who is beloved by so many. Good luck Robert. STICK IT TO THE MAN.

What would Westpaces/Northside be without the flower man? Hes always smiling, selling is beautiful flowers; he's an Atlanta institution! He even directs the traffic! Robert, good luck, hopefully those muckety mucks will realize they've made the wrong decision!

Robert is someone who has made me smile my whole life. I would drive by him everyday, but now the westpaces intersection (the flowerman's intersection) seems quit differnt. Robert has brougth joy to many residents in buckhead, and im sure hes probably stopped a few car wrecks from happening, because he is always watching traffic to make sure everything is ok.robert doesnt cause any problems, but prevents them. LET HIM STAY AT HIS INTERSECTION! I LOVE YOU FLOWERMAN!

Robert Hiestand is a neighborhood landmark, he has doen nothing to deserve his removal. It is plain wrong to remove an honest, hardworking man from a place he has been 16 years when he causing no harm!

Robert once lived. Now he's dead. How will I live without him telling me when to accelerate, even if I am already moving? I once thought about buying his flowers, but then I didn't. The City of Atlanta would not ask him to quit, unless they had reason to believe his operation was unethical, illegal or had numerous complaints. Regardless, he is back now, and he is "directing traffic" again... I hope the City resolves this issue, be it good or bad for the Rose Man. I sure hope to see him out on the streets on Tuesdays at 2 AM again.

One of my favorite things about driving through buckhead is seeing the smile on the flower-man's face every time I drive by. Why should flower seekers have to deal with the terrible parking at publix if they need flowers when there is a friendly, happy, and convenient man selling flowers on the corner?

How can you try to take away Robert? He is a huge part of our community; and it would be an injustice to Atlanta to make him leave. Robert brightens everyone's day by being a joyful reminder that there is a lot more to this world than the Buckhead life that so many of us are cought up in.

Please allow Robert or, "the rose guy" as every student at Westminster (just down the road) calls him, to stay. He has been a crucial fixture for our neighborhood. I have a hard time believing that his presence selling roses is the biggest "problem" the police have to deal with.

We all love Robert! Ever since I was in first grade, I remember seeing him out at the corner selling roses. I've practically grown up with him! And I've purchased his roses on many occasions, since they're absolutely beautiful and couldn't be any more convenient! Come on, city of Atlanta. Don't you guys have anything better to do than pick on a man who's only bettering his community by engaging in honest work? Seeing him out with his roses always cheers me up if I've had a bad day. I know many of the Westminster students will stand by him against the stupidity of the city's sudden "policy." Long live the rose man!

First of all the Atlanta Police Department has better things to worry about than a man selling roses on a popular street corner. Not only has he become part of our daily lives and community, wouldnt you rather have Robert selling roses and making an income than living off of your welfare money or selling drugs to children. If the Atlanta Police take away his source of income from selling roses, what do you think he will turn to? Unemployment is a breading ground for drug addiction and crime, Be Smart and let him sell the roses for goodness sake.

Robert was a mainstay of the corner during my tenure at Westminster. He is and has always been a welcomed and loved member of the community. Notwithstanding all the potential relationship disasters he helped me avoid, he is a caring and conscientious member of our community. I remember driving by him many days during Braves games and hearing him rooting on our team. Despite the tense feelings in traffic in Buckhead, he was always able to bring a smile to the faces of his many passers-by.
Please let him keep his business alive and continue to brighten the corner of Northside and West Paces Ferry. Forcing his customers to pay more at Publix for lower quality flowers is a total disservice to the community

I remember when I was about five and six, whenever we drove past the flower man, I would always bang on the window and wave as fast as my puny little arm could. And now, every day when I drive by the flower man, I have to smile when i see hundreds of other kids pounding on the windows and bouncing up and down with excitement. There's just soemthing wrong with trying to get rid of a person who brings so much joy to others. God bless.
